Grade 12 HL and SL ITGS students will create a series of podcasts based on the HL Case Study for the May 2007 exam.

Here are assignment requirements and a detailed timeline.

Assignment details


  • There will be FOUR podcasts
  • Each podcast is to be 5-7 minutes in length
  • You are to use voice, music, sound effects etc to make the podcast interesting
  • The podcast must be put online and available via subscription
  • Work together as a whole class to provide continuity between programs such as the same theme music and format

What is podcasting?


  • Define what podcasting is in terms of developments, concepts and trends
  • What are the various forms of podcasting? (eg vodcasting)
  • Who is podcasting?
    • Give current examples of best-practice use of podcasting in education, business, news etc
  • Why are people podcasting?
    • Can you contact musicians, news agencies, teachers etc and ask them why they are podcasting and what their best-practice approach is?

How do you podcast?


  • What are the IT systems that support podcasting?
    • Hardware and software for creating a podcast
    • XML files
    • Podcatching software
    • Difference between digital and analogue
  • Once a podcast/audio file is created how and where is uploaded?
    • websites, blogs, wikis
  • How is a podcast distributed? How do you subscribe to a podcast?
    • RSS feed, iTunes subscription
    • Use of mobile technology for playback

What is the impact of podcasting?


  • Provide evidence as to the impact of podcasting on education
    • Best-practice examples: what are they being used for and how?
    • How has podcasting benefited students? Give examples from eduational practice across all levels of education.
  • Provide evidence as to the impact of podcasting on the media
    • How is the face of media changing? How is the information different when presented as a podcast?
    • Is podcasting replacing and/or supplementing radio or TV?

What are the ethical challenges of podcasting?


  • Advantages and disadvantages of podcasting
    • related problems in the workplace? in the classroom?
    • Commercial aspects: selling podcasts (security and provacy of data)
  • Who controls podcasting?
  • Censorship and editorial rights (freedom of speech issues)
    • Creative Commons licensing development
    • Misrepresentation or extremism
  • Policy developent to protect the users and the creators of podcasts

Timeline


Week 1: Feb.25-
  • Collect data and resources
  • Post research information to your wiki page
  • Prepare draft scripts for podcast and post to wiki
Week 2: Mar.4-
  • Work as a class to decide on format of podcast and where it will be made available
  • Complete final scripts and have proof read
Week 3: Mar.11-
  • Rehearse and record podcast
  • Use available SW to edit and save as MP3 file
Week 4: Mar.18-
  • Upload podcast and make available via subscription
  • Advertise to the world! (ISD at least)
  • Sit a mock exam paper based on this case study
